Wanna caucus with me? Security Council Resolution 1701
Exellencies,
talking about a matter of diplomacy I will now switch to my favourite official UN-language :-)
As you probably know: The problem of using the internet is not that there does not exist an information you need - the only problem is how to find all the shit. For example today: I desperately tried to find the latest Security Council Resolution 1701 dealing with the current Lebanon crisis. Not an easy job: The latest resolution published on the Security Council's website is number 1700 - at the end I managed to derive it from bb.co.uk (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/5249488.stm).
The crucial point is clearly operative clause one: "Calls for a full cessation of hostilities based upon, in particular, the immediate cessation by Hezbollah of all attacks and the immediate cessation by Israel of all offensive military operations;". Without taking sides to apparently one can say that the resolution lets Israel get off lightly: Stopping the Hezbollah the Council leaves it up to the interpreation of Olmert (and the Bush-guys) what exactly the semantic coverage of "offensive" is. Obviously only until the bluehelmets (15.000 international soldiers plus 15.000 Lebanese) are deployed. The negotiated ceasefire starts tomorrow, Monday, 7 am.
Deciding to remain actively seized of the matter,
